Police Board
The Victoria Police Board (Board) is responsible for providing
police and law enforcement services for the municipalities of
Esquimalt and Victoria.
The 2012 Victoria
Police Board is comprised of:
- Mayor Fortin of Victoria, Chair and Media Contact Person
- Mayor Desjardins of Esquimalt, Vice Chair
- Mr. Ralston Alexander, Provincial Appointee
- Ms. Lindalee Brougham, Provincial Appointee
- Mr. Gurdial (Gordy) Singh Dodd, Provincial Appointee
- Mr. David Johns, Provincial Appointee
- Ms. Joan Kotarski, Council Appointee (Victoria)
- Ms. Kathy Mick, Council Appointee (Esquimalt)
- Ms. Christine Stoneman, Provincial Appointee
The mandate of the Board, on behalf of the residents of
Esquimalt and Victoria, is to provide civilian oversight to the
activities of the Department consistent with the provisions of the
Police
Act (Act). This includes:
- Establishing an independent police department and appointing
the chief constable and other constables and employees;
- Directing and overseeing the Department to ensure the
enforcement of municipal bylaws, criminal laws and the laws of
British Columbia, the maintenance of law and order; and the
prevention of crime;
- Carrying out other requirements as specified in the
Act and other relevant legislation; and
- Playing a key role in ensuring that the organization carries
out its actions and activities in an acceptable manner.
The Board operates under to oversight of the Police Services Division of the BC Ministry of
Public Safety and Solicitor General who is responsible for
Police Boards and policing in BC.
