A ‘Change’ of Pace for Parking Meter Thieves Caught by VicPD

Victoria BC – A well-known property thief and his accomplice, both recently arrested for destroying and stealing parking meters, are behind bars thanks to VicPD’s Crime Reduction Unit.

VicPD’s Crime Reduction Unit started an investigation into stolen parking meters in early November when information came to light that the suspects may have been responsible for parking meter theft through Victoria and in communities throughout the island.

Victoria Mayor Lisa Helps Officially Sworn in as Victoria and Esquimalt Police Board Co-Chair

Victoria BC – Last night, Chief Constable Frank Elsner officially swore in Victoria and Esquimalt Police Board co-chair, Victoria Mayor Lisa Helps.

Mayor Helps was sworn in during the public portion of the Police Board meeting at VicPD headquarters.

Mayor Helps was elected Mayor of Victoria on November 15th and assumes the role of co-chair of the Victoria and Esquimalt Police board, along with Esquimalt Mayor Barb Desjardins, as part of her duties as mayor.

VicPD Investigating after Four Injured in Bar Incident

Victoria BC – VicPD officers are investigating after four people suffered non-life threatening injuries at an incident in a local bar.

Officers were called to a bar in the 500-block of Yates Street at approximately 12:30 a.m. for a report of an assault. Upon arrival, officers found four people who had suffered cuts after being involved in an altercation on the dance floor.

Although there were numerous people in the bar, no witnesses were able to identify the suspect.

All the injured people received medical attention for their injuries.

Fleet-Footed Criminal Arrested by VicPD

Victoria BC – A fleet-footed criminal, wanted for outstanding warrants and prohibited driving, was arrested after a short foot pursuit with VicPD officers on Saturday morning.

At approximately 3 a.m. on Saturday, a VicPD K9 officer was patrolling the Rock Bay neighbourhood when he noticed a vehicle driving around the block repeatedly. The officer followed the vehicle and called for backup as he planned to investigate.

Light up the Island and CRD CounterAttack Starts Tonight

Victoria BC – Tonight, VicPD, Saanich PD and the Capital Regional District Road Safety Unit launch ‘Light up the Island’, an impaired driving enforcement campaign from the British Columbia Association of Chiefs of Police Traffic Safety Committee, aimed at targeting impaired and distracted drivers across Vancouver Island.

The ‘Light up the Island’ campaign includes all police agencies on Vancouver Island with check stops throughout.

VicPD Looking for Witnesses in Summertime Bar Assault that Left One with Injuries

Victoria BC – VicPD officers, who are investigating an assault that happened at a bar earlier this year, are hoping that a renewed call for witnesses will help solve the case.

Officers were called to Bastion Square at approximately 11:45 p.m. on Saturday, June 28th, 2014 after a 33-year-old Langford man was struck in the face with an object, causing significant injury to the side of his face.

Historic Charge Books Returning to VicPD with a Techno Twist thanks to the Victoria Genealogical Society and UVic Libraries

Victoria BC – “Book ‘em!” It’s a phrase commonly used in police TV dramas and refers to the handwritten charge books used on the front lines of law enforcement. Now, historic VicPD charge books are being returned to VicPD after being preserved electronically by volunteers of the Victoria Genealogical Society and the UVic Libraries’ Digitization Unit.

These historic charge books from the 19th century are part of Victoria’s rich history and document chargeable offenses within our borders, including these colourful examples:

Analysis and Intelligence Section Nabs Bank Robber

Victoria BC – VicPD’s Analysis and Intelligence Section (AIS) is being credited for identifying and, in an unusual turn of events, apprehending a bank robber.

Officers were called to a bank in the 700-block of Yates Street at approximately 4:30 p.m. on Monday, November 17th for a report of a robbery.

Staff stated a man had come into the bank and demanded cash, claiming he had a gun. Staff gave the man an undisclosed amount of cash and he fled.

Wanted Suspect Runs, but Neighbours and Police Dog Track Him Down

Victoria BC – A wanted man is behind bars after neighbours and a VicPD K9 team tracked and arrested him after fleeing  from police who attempted to pull him over on Wednesday night.

A VicPD K9 officer was driving in the area of Catherine Street when he noticed an older-model black Chevrolet Cavalier speeding in the area. The officer attempted to pull the car over, but the driver refused to stop.
