The Victoria Police Department,
founded in 1858, is the oldest municipal police department in
Canada west of the Great Lakes. It serves an urban area of nine
square miles with a population of approximately 97,000 people, in
the municipalities of Victoria and Esquimalt in the center of the
Greater Victoria area.
The Victoria Police Department currently employs 241 sworn
members and 107 civilian members in a variety of different roles,
including positions in the Uniform Services Division (Patrol, Bikes
and Beat, Traffic), Investigative Services Division, and other
specialized sections. The Victoria Police Department has been a
leader in innovation, including introducing the TASER to the
Canadian policing community and having the first digital forensic
unit in the country. The Victoria Police Department is an equal

changing responsibilities, who are oriented to customer service and
who are able to facilitate problem solving in the community.

Jail Guards
The Jailer is responsible for all male and female prisoners in
the Victoria Police Department jail (the jail). This includes the
security of prisoners, and all prisoner needs during their
detention in the jail. Specific duties include the “booking inâ€
process, preparing and entering arrest records for identifying
prisoners in custody, searching prisoners for weapons, valuables,
drugs or any other contraband and documenting same, locking
prisoners in cells...

Civilian Employment
There are approximately 100 civilian members employed at the
Victoria Police Department, made up of unionized workers under CUPE
Local 50, contract employees and exempt staff. Employees enjoy the

Comm Centre
The Victoria Police 911 Communications Centre is looking for men
and women who can provide professional, high quality emergency and
non-emergency communications to the public. The Communications
Centre is the hub for calls for service - emergency and
non-emergency. Our centre currently employs approximately 50
regular and auxiliary staff.

Volunteer
The volunteer roster is extensive and includes individuals of
all ages and diversified backgrounds. Some of the younger members
are considering a career in law enforcement and want to get
invaluable experience. Others are students, office workers and
retirees who are looking for a stimulating volunteer opportunity.
There are two different roles: Crime Watch & Front Counter
