Victoria, BC – Patrol officers apprehended a barricaded man in crisis this morning who damaged a multi-unit residential building in Victoria.

Shortly before 3:30 a.m. this morning, Patrol officers were called to a multi-unit residential building in the 300-block of Douglas Street for a report that a man was running through hallways at that location, kicking at doors and damaging property. Several residents called police out of concern for their safety.

Multiple Patrol officers attended and located the man, who had barricaded himself within a suite within the building. Officers began negotiations with the man and utilized crisis intervention and de-escalation techniques in efforts to resolve the incident and take the man into custody safely. Officers learned that the man was in a mental health crisis, and he refused to comply with the officers.

At approximately 4:30 a.m. the man surrendered and officers apprehended him under the Mental Health Act. A less-lethal bean bag round was deployed during the incident. The man was transported to hospital with non-life threatening injuries and for a mental health assessment.

This file remains under investigation. Officers will be recommending charges of mischief.
