Victoria, BC –Major Crime Unit (MCU) investigators are asking for witnesses to come forward after an officer with VicPD’s Forensic Identification Section (FIS) was randomly attacked while processing the scene of a stabbing last night.
At approximately 11:40 p.m., last night, an FIS officer was processing the scene where a man was stabbed near the intersection of Pandora Avenue and Vancouver Street. The area was blocked off by police tape and the FIS officer was on scene, in full duty uniform, processing the area. While walking back into the scene to complete further forensic testing, the FIS officer was approached and verbally confronted by a man.
Without warning, the man raised a skateboard and swung it at the FIS officer’s head.
The FIS officer was able to fight off the attack. The FIS officer told the suspect that he was under arrest, at which point the suspect attempted to flee the area. The FIS officer called for additional assistance and two Patrol officers, who were in the immediate area assisting with the investigation, responded and disarmed the suspect. The suspect was arrested without further incident.
The FIS officer was not physically harmed in the attack, although their camera was damaged.
The suspect was transported to VicPD cells. Officers then learned that the suspect had an outstanding warrant from another police department. This warrant was also executed while the man was in VicPD cells.
The FIS officer continued to process the scene with alternate equipment.
The suspect was later released with future court dates.
This incident remains under investigation. MCU investigators are asking anyone who witnessed the incident to come forward. If you have information about this incident, please call the VicPD Report Desk at (250) 995-7654 extension 1.
