FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Date: January 15, 2026

File: 26-193

The Victoria Police Department (VicPD) has concluded a thorough investigation into the bear spray incident that occurred at Mayfair Mall earlier this month.

On January 2, 2026, just after 2:00 p.m., officers were called to Mayfair Mall after bear spray was discharged in the food court. The spray contaminated the entire area, impacting numerous patrons. Several innocent bystanders were affected, including two infants. The suspects fled the scene immediately following the incident.

As a result of the investigation, police arrested two individuals in connection with the incident, and it appears to be a broader conflict involving multiple groups of youth. One adult male was arrested on January 10, 2026, and has been charged with assault with a weapon. A second individual, a youth, was arrested and held in custody on January 13, 2026, and faces charges of assault with a weapon and possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose.

The BC Prosecution Service has now approved charges against the youth, including six counts of assault with a weapon, one count of causing a disturbance, and one count of possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose.

Due to the age of the youth involved, no further identifying information will be released.

VicPD wishes to thank mall staff, BCEHS, Fire, and members of the public for their cooperation during the investigation. Incidents involving weapons in public spaces place community members at significant risk, and police remain committed to holding those responsible accountable while working to ensure public safety.
