Victoria, BC – Robert Chappell, the 79-year-old Esquimalt man who was reported missing yesterday, was located by Search and Rescue in Macaulay Point park at approximately 10 am this morning. SAR, with the assistance of Department of National Defence Fire crews were able to extricate the missing man and transport him to waiting BC Ambulance personnel. He will be transported to hospital for treatment for non-life-threatening injuries.

Search and Rescue met our members in Esquimalt this morning, and given that the missing man is an avid bird watcher, worked to focus on local areas known for birds.

At approximately 10 am, while searching Macaulay Point Park, a SAR member reported hearing a bird “chirp louder than others” in the area. The SAR member investigated and discovered the missing man, who had slipped between two large boulders and was unable extricate himself.

VicPD would like to thank all members of the public who shared Mr. Chappell’s information and aided in efforts to locate him. It is the efforts of volunteer members of the public, like those who form our local emergency search and rescue teams, in coordination with ours and other public safety organizations, that located Mr. Chappell in time.
