Victoria BC – VicPD is taking extra steps to honour the remarkable contributions of our volunteers during National Volunteer Appreciation Week by launching the #VolunteersRock campaign.

Follow along this year on VicPD’s Instagram, Twitter and Facebook accounts at 8 a.m. and 1 p.m. as we introduce the community to individual volunteers through our #VolunteersRock campaign. Each day, a number of VicPD volunteers and Reserve Constables will be introduced to the community with a photo and short bio. We will also be sharing the great feedback we get from our communities and officers recognizing the work that the Volunteers and Reserve Constables do in our communities.

VicPD’s 90 volunteers and 47 Reserve Constables provided the communities of Victoria and Esquimalt with over 14,000 hours of donated time during the last year.

VicPD’s volunteers support several crime prevention and safety initiatives through the Crime Watch program.  Responsive to the needs of both VicPD and the community, Crime Watch volunteers carry out diverse activities that include the delivery of the Lock out Auto Crime, Cell Phone & Speed Watch programs, distributing public assistance flyers, and attending community events.  Volunteers are also the first friendly faces that greet visitors at VicPD’s front desk.  These volunteers answer general questions and assist the Front Desk Duty Constable as needed.

Reserve Constables are also very active in our communities with numerous duties including Lock out Auto Crime, Block Watch, Safety Presentations, Bike Pickup and Crime Free Multi-Housing. There are many proactive projects that Reserves are trained to do, including safety audits of residential and commercial buildings. Property owners or homeowners can request trained Reserve Constables to attend and do a thorough Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) assessment of the property and offer recommendations to the property owner.

“Our Volunteers and Reserve Constables contribute to the health and well-being of our communities in so many ways,” said Chief Constable Frank Elsner. “Volunteers are the heart of our community and organization and we are lucky to have them and honoured to recognize their contributions.”
