Just after 12:30 Thursday afternoon an Esquimalt man came to the front counter of VicPD’s West division, sewing machine in hand. The man had been doing some cleaning at his house and found the sewing machine among property stored by his step-daughter’s old friend.The find proved suspicious to the man, which prompted him to start looking into the machine’s origins. A quick call to the local Singer store revealed two facts that surprised the man. Firstly, that the machine had been reported stolen years in the past and secondly, the machine was worth over $9000.The pattern coming together, the man brought the machine in to the West division front counter staff, who were able to confirm that the machine was reported stolen just before Christmas in 2007. West division staff, having put all the pieces together and with a design for justice, were able to contact the original owner.The owner reported that the machine was purchased as a Christmas gift back in 2007, but unfortunately, before it could be set under the tree, the owner’s car was broken into and the machine taken. The 7-year-old machine is still in the original box and has never been used. It’s to be reunited with the original owner early next week.
