Victoria, BC – VicPD Major Crime Detectives along with the Victoria Fire Investigators continue their investigation into a suspicious fire at Toys R Us.

On April 27th, VicPD and the Victoria Fire Department attended Toys R Us shortly after 2:00 p.m. for the report of a fire. Upon arrival, police and the fire department were able to evacuate the mall and nobody was injured although there was significant damage to the store. Victoria Police Major Crime Detectives and the Victoria Fire Department Investigator are actively investigating the cause of the suspicious fire.

The initial investigation has determined that there are a number of witnesses that police have yet to speak with. Pictures of these potential witnesses are attached. Investigators would like to speak with these people as well as anybody who was in the Toy R Us between 1:00pm and 2:00pm on Wednesday, April 27th. It is important to remember that even though you might not think you’re a witness, if you were in the store during that time, you might be able to aid our investigators.

“Our preliminary investigation leads me to believe this fire was deliberately set,” says Detective Constable Ian Hynes.  “A fire such as this is an exceptionally dangerous scenario and our team are going to exhaust every avenue to determine who is responsible.”

VicPD investigators would also like to commend the actions of store staff members who were extremely brave and potentially saved lives by their quick actions to control the fire.

If you recognize any of these witnesses shown, or you were in Toys-R-Us between 1pm – 2pm on Wednesday April 27th please call the Victoria Police Department non-emergency line at (250)995-7654 and let them know that you are phoning regarding the Toys R Us fire.
