Listen: VicPD Traffic Section Completes Bicycle Safety Week

Victoria BC – VicPD Traffic section was busy last week with a project aimed at educating cyclists about their responsibilities under B.C.’s Motor Vehicle Act.

Over two days last week officers patrolled the downtown core and intervened when unsafe cycling was noted. Throughout the week officers wrote numerous tickets and issued several verbal and written warnings.

Officers dealt with offences in the following ways:

57 Verbal Warnings
6 Written Warnings
27 Tickets for Cycling without Helmet
4 Tickets for Riding on the Sidewalk
1 Ticket for Riding in a Crosswalk
1 Ticket for Disobeying a Traffic Control Device

Although a week-long project, VicPD officers are always concerned about cycling safety and enforcement efforts regularly occur. This campaign was part of VicPD’s long-term traffic safety strategy, which sees officers concentrating on specific campaigns, partnered with public announcements.
