Victoria, BC – The investigation continues into the circumstances surrounding an incident in which a distraught man climbed a downtown construction crane.

Officers were called to the 700-block of Pandora Avenue just after 5:20 p.m. on Tuesday, October 4th, for a report that an unauthorized man had entered a construction site and began to climb the crane there. When officers arrived, the man made statements to them that caused them concern for his safety and well-being as well as the safety of passersby.

Out of an abundance of caution and in efforts to peacefully resolve the situation, officers closed the 700-block of Pandora Avenue to traffic. Patrol officers, Crisis Negotiators, and members of the Greater Victoria Emergency Response team responded to the incident.

Over the course of a number of hours, officers worked to persuade the man to come down from the crane. This team effort was ultimately successful just after 9 p.m., when the man came down and was taken into custody safely and without further incident. He was transported to hospital.

Officers are considering recommending charges including breaking and entering and mischief.
