Victoria, BC – This morning,  A/Chief Manak presented VicPD’s Mental Health Strategy (http://vicpd.ca/mental-health-strategy)  to Victoria City Council.

“This strategy demonstrates the Victoria Police Department’s recognition of the impact of mental health on the lives of all citizens in our communities, and on our own employees,” A/Chief Del Manak said.  “The strategy clearly lays out how we intend to take a proactive person-centred approach to addressing mental illness in our communities.”

The VicPD Mental Health Strategy was created in partnership with various individuals and organizations in our community and from across the country.  As part of our strategy, we recognize the overlap between mental health and substance use.  For this reason, we have specifically acknowledged the link and prevalence of mental health and substance use throughout the strategy.

As part of our next steps, and to show our commitment to all the principles contained in our Mental Health Strategy, in the coming weeks we will create a Mental Health Strategy Next Steps Action Plan to plan out our initiatives for the coming two years.

Victoria Police would like to thank all of the contributors to this strategy.
