Victoria, BC – Officers are reminding skateboarders of regulations and safer operation practices after a Sunday afternoon collision sent a skateboarder to hospital.
Officers attended for a report of a collision between a pedestrian and a vehicle at the corner of Johnson and Broad streets at about 1:15 pm on Sunday, October 15th. When officers arrived, they discovered that the pedestrian had been riding a skateboard and has suffered with non-life-threatening injuries. She was transported to hospital.
According to witnesses, the pedestrian had been riding her skateboard at high speed on the sidewalk and failed to stop or pause at the intersection before entering the crosswalk.
This incident is a good reminder that skateboards are not permitted to be ridden on downtown sidewalks. Additionally, when entering a crosswalk, pedestrians are required to dismount a bicycle or skateboard. It is always safest to wait for traffic to come to a stop before entering the crosswalk. We encourage drivers, cyclists and pedestrians to make eye contact with each other when crossing through intersections.
