Victoria, BC – A Victoria man is in custody after officers responded to a report of a man with a handgun in downtown Victoria this afternoon.

Officers attended the area of Fort and Douglas Streets after calls came in to our 911 Communications Centre from concerned citizens about a man who had passed a handgun to another man on the street. Officers secured the area and then approached the suspect who was taken into custody without additional incident. While being taken into custody the man remarked to officers that he had a replica firearm in his backpack. A photo of the recovered replica is below.

The man, who is well-known to officers, is under court ordered conditions which include prohibitions for possessing firearms or items which resemble firearms. While our investigation is still ongoing, charges for breach of these conditions are being considered.
