Victoria, BC – A man is now in custody following an early morning incident in which multiple vehicles were struck this morning and a several hours long barricade.

Officers were called just before 6:15 a.m. this morning after the report of an intoxicated man standing in the middle of the road in the area of Shelbourne and Begbie Streets.

Officers arrived and the man attempted to flee in a vehicle, ramming multiple parked cars, including the first attending police vehicle. Nobody, including officers, was injured.

The vehicle, which was stolen, was abandoned a short distance away. The man fled on foot.

The man fled to a residence on Begbie Street where he barricaded himself inside. The Greater Victoria Emergency Response Team (GVERT) was activated and negotiators deployed to the scene to work to resolve the incident peacefully.

Traffic on Shelbourne Street was disrupted.

After several hours, officers obtained a warrant to enter the residence. GVERT officers entered the residence and took the man into custody without further incident. Roads in the area are now open to traffic.

This incident remains under investigation.
