Victoria, BC – Matthew McTavish, a 35-year-old Victoria man, has been charged with manslaughter after a fatal shooting of a man in Esquimalt in December of 2020.
Shortly after 5:30 a.m. on Tuesday, December 22nd, 2020, VicPD officers were called to a suite in a multi-unit residential building in the 600-block of Grenville Avenue in Esquimalt for a report that a man had been shot. Officers attended the scene and located the victim, who was suffering from life-threatening injuries from a shooting. BC Emergency Health Services attended and transported the victim to hospital.
The suspect had left the scene prior to police arrival. However, VicPD officers located and arrested Matthew McTavish nearby.
The victim succumbed to his injuries in hospital.
The Vancouver Island Integrated Major Crime Unit (VIIMCU) assumed conduct of this homicide investigation. On December 20, 2021, Matthew McTavish was charged with one count of manslaughter. In addition, he has been charged with possession of a loaded prohibited or restricted firearm, and possession of a firearm contrary to order in relation to this incident. Matthew McTavish remains in custody and is set to appear in court on December 21, 2021.
As the matter is before the courts there will be no further comments at this time.
