Victoria, BC – Officers took a man into custody after responding to a report of ongoing threats and assaults against a woman who was being held against her will at a downtown Victoria condo Tuesday night.

Just before 9 p.m. Tuesday night, Patrol officers responded to a report that a man was holding a woman against her will in a downtown condo building. Officers arrived and located the victim and suspect barricaded in a unit in the building. Officers evacuated nearby units and began working to de-escalate the incident safely.

Officers with the Greater Victoria Emergency Response Team (GVERT) including Crisis Negotiators, as well as officers with the Integrated Canine Service, and VicPD’s Investigative Services Division all responded.

Crisis Negotiators worked for several hours to resolve the incident safely at which point the woman was able to exit the suite to waiting officers.

The suspect remained in the suite. Just after 1 a.m. Wednesday morning, GVERT officers utilized a noise-making device, along with voice commands, to convince the suspect to surrender. He was taken into custody without incident. He was not injured.

This incident remains under investigation.

The suspect currently faces recommended charges for assault. He was held in custody after appearing in court.
