Victoria, BCAs the new school year approaches, police departments across the region are reminding the public that school zones will be back in effect starting Tuesday, September 3.

As students return to the classroom, drivers are reminded to slow down in school zones. Speeding in these areas can result in a fine of nearly $200 or more and three penalty points on your license. Speeding is just one aspect of ensuring safety; distracted driving, which is a factor in nearly 40% of crashes in B.C., is another significant concern. With school zones expected to be busy, it’s crucial to stay focused and avoid using your phone while driving.

Parents and caregivers are encouraged to speak with their children about staying attentive while commuting. Remind them to remove earbuds, put away devices, and make eye contact with drivers before crossing at designated crosswalks. Situational awareness is essential for their safety.

Throughout the region, officers and volunteers will be actively conducting school zone enforcement and education next month. For more information and safety tips, visit ICBC. Together, we can ensure a safe start to the school year for everyone.
