Victoria, B.C. – Members of the Victoria Police Department and BC Highway Patrol – CRD Integrated Road Safety Unit have teamed up for a joint force operation, as part of a larger VicPD campaign on intersection safety and enforcement.
In VicPD’s most recent community engagement survey, traffic offences were the third main concern from respondents. We have heard the feedback from our community that people want to see police on the road – and these joint force operations help make it possible.
“Road safety is a shared priority,” says VicPD Media Relations Officer, Sgt. Kristin Greffard. “Visible enforcement acts as a deterrent and promotes safer driving behaviours. We are grateful to partner with IRSU on initiatives like these.”
VicPD’s Traffic Unit has chosen intersection enforcement as an added priority, because that’s where vehicle interfaces with vulnerable road users are most likely to happen.
In the first three events, VicPD officers have issued a total of 46 tickets and 9 warnings. Of those tickets, 41 of them were for cellphone violations.
During Wednesday’s joint force operation at Hillside Avenue and Shelbourne Street, members also reminded a cyclist about wearing their helmet and for pedestrians to wait to cross the intersection until a ‘walk’ signal appeared.
"We support proactive policing, and opportunities to educate and remind all road users of the regulations under the Motor Vehicle Act,” says Sgt. Greffard. “For safer streets, we need everyone to slow down, be situationally aware, and be mindful of their actions.”
