Listen: Two Times Unlucky: Suspect Breaks into Business Two Times in Four Months and is Arrested…Again
Sharp-eyed staff from a local restaurant are being credited with quickly solving a break and enter this morning by identifying the same man who broke in nearly four months ago.
Officers were notified about the break and enter in progress after VicPD received a call from an alarm company for the restaurant in the 1200-block of Wharf Street. Numerous officers arrived, including a VicPD K9 team, but at the time, they were unable to locate the suspect.
Employees of the restaurant were called to secure the building and help officers view video surveillance and check inventory for any missing items. When the employees showed the video, they realized the suspect in the video was the same one who had broken in to the restaurant in late April. Officers checked the file and had the name for the suspect.
About an hour later, the VicPD K9 officer and four-legged partner were driving near Mason and Amelia streets when he spotted the 30-year-old Esquimalt man, who was the suspect in the break and enter. He was arrested for the crime and was found to be breaching his conditions from a previous conviction.
Both times the store had been broken into, alcohol was the target. The suspect admitted his involvement in the break and enters, and was held for court. Officers are recommending two charges, one for break and enter and one for breaching court ordered conditions.
