Victoria, BC – Police are recommending multiple charges after four officers were injured while intervening in a domestic assault at Tent City.

Just after 7:20 p.m. tonight, two special duty officers assigned to Tent City, heard what officers believed to be a domestic assault occurring in one of the tents in the 850 Burdett Ave encampment.  When the officers attempted to intervene, they were met by a highly combative man who began to assault them.  Multiple other police units attended quickly to intervene. Two assisting officers were also assaulted and a TASER was then deployed to gain control of the man who was then taken into custody without further incident.

In total, four police officers were injured, with three of them being transported to hospital for treatment. All officers suffered non-life threatening injuries. The male suspect was transported to hospital, cleared medically and returned to VicPD cells. He was not injured. Detectives are currently interviewing witnesses who observed the incident.

At this time, police are recommending four charges of assaulting a police officer, possession of a prohibited weapon, assault and resist arrest in addition to other charges. The man, who is known to police, is being held in police custody and is set to appear in court tomorrow.
