Victoria, BC – Yesterday, two officers were assaulted when trying to arrest a man in the 800-block of Cormorant Street.

Officers were called for the report of two men fighting inside of a business and as police officers arrived, one man was located walking away. Officers attempted to de-escalate the situation and when they went to arrest the man, he became extremely violent, assaulting two officers in the process of the arrest.  Additional officers attended and were able to safely arrest the man.  One of the officer’s glasses were broken during the arrest. The two officers that were assaulted were able to return to work.

The man was not injured in the altercation. The man, who was the subject of another serious altercation with VicPD members last year, was arrested for resisting arrest, assaulting a police officer and breaching his probation. He is set to appear in court today.

Today, two officers have been transported to hospital with non-life threatening injuries after the arrest of a man this morning.

Officers attended the 500-block of Johnson Street at approximately 7:15 a.m., after the report of a break and enter in progress.  While officers were responding to the call, a description was provided of the suspect, and an observant officer located a man matching the description at Douglas Street and Pandora Avenue.  After a brief conversation the man then assaulted one of the officers and attempted to assault the other. The man then fled.  He was eventually stopped at Douglas and Yates streets where a Taser was utilized in an attempt to safely arrest the man. The Taser was not successful.  After a brief struggle, the man was taken into custody.  Another officer was injured during this arrest.

The two officers that were injured suffered non-life threatening injuries and potentially will be off work for some time.  One officer remains in hospital.  The suspect, who was not injured, remains in custody.

Both incidents are examples of the dangers that our officers face on a daily basis as they serve the citizens of Victoria and Esquimalt.
