Victoria BC – Officers are thanking the public for their tremendous assistance after the arrest of a violent suspect yesterday.

An officer was in the area of Vic West yesterday morning when he observed a man and a woman walking out of a store. The man was bound by conditions not to be in contact with the woman due to a violent assault that had occurred earlier in August.

When the man saw the police officer, he fled the area on foot.  As the officer was searching for the man, a citizen in the 600-block of Tyee Road waved at the officer asking if he was looking for somebody. He then stated that the suspect was seated in a nearby parking lot. The officer drove to the parking lot and the man fled on foot with the officer in chase. The officer lost sight of the man briefly but several women in a local business directed the officer through some bushes and down to the Galloping Goose trail near the Bay Street bridge.

Once the officer made his way to the trail, a cyclist advised the officer that the man fled northbound on the trail. The officer continued running and was alerted by another citizen that the man had gone down to the beach near the trestle. Two other officers were on the trestle with two kayakers yelling that the man was right under the officers. The man was then taken into custody.

The arrest of the man would not have happened without the support and assistance by various members of the public. The investigating officers would like to specifically thank those citizens who assisted with information.
