Victoria, BC – Patrol officers are warning the public and investigating after an ATM skimmer was discovered at a high-volume ATM in Victoria’s Inner Harbour.
Officers were called by staff at the Tourist Information Centre, located at 812 Wharf Street, after a passerby discovered a suspicious device attached to the card input at the ATM located there. Staff turned the device over to officers who recognized it as an ATM skimmer. Two photos of the device are below.
ATM skimmers are often deployed with a camera to record potential victims entering their PINs. Officers searched the area but did not locate a camera. It is not known at this time how long the skimmer was at the ATM, or how many cards may be impacted.
If you used the ATM at 812 Wharf Street, you are urged to check your banking information and report any suspicious transactions to your financial services provider immediately and report the incidents by calling our non-emergency line at (250) 995-7654.
The “wiggle test” is a simple step you can take to protect yourself against these types of crimes. When inserting your card into an ATM, grasp and gently wiggle the card receptacle. If it is loose or comes free, it is likely a skimmer. Notify the owner and call police.
