Victoria, BC –A patrol officer received non-life-threatening injuries while conducting a mental health apprehension Sunday night.

Shortly before 10:30 p.m., officers attended the 1100-block of Johnson Street to check the welfare of a resident of a multi-dwelling building. It was reported that the man was suffering from an apparent mental health crisis.  Officers spoke with the man and as they began to apprehend him, he allegedly kicked an officer in the face.

The officer was transported to hospital with non-life threatening injuries and was subsequently released after treatment. It is expected the officer will be off of work for some time to recover.

The man was apprehended by several other officers and transported to hospital.  A charge of Assaulting a Peace Officer Causing Bodily Harm is being recommended to Crown Counsel.
