Victoria, BC – VicPD officers and staff are extending our condolences to the family of a cyclist who died following a collision between a vehicle and a cyclist early Friday evening.

VicPD Patrol officers, along with Integrated Road Safety Unit and Saanich Police Traffic Safety Unit officers, all responded to the scene near the intersection of Gorge Road and Harriet Street just after 5:30 p.m. on Friday evening. Despite the best efforts of passersby, police officers and BC Emergency Health Services paramedics, the young woman’s injuries proved to be fatal.

We have informed the young woman’s family of her death. The young woman’s family is from a country outside of Canada, which created a delay in making sure they had been informed in person, which in turn created a delay in our ability to update our community with information on this file. We take these steps to ensure that someone learns that their loved one has died in person, in a caring and trauma-informed manner, and are not surprised by its announcement on the news or online.

The driver of the vehicle involved remained on the scene and has fully cooperated with investigators. Impairment is not considered to be a factor at this time. The driver has also been offered supports.

We are working with our partners in the BC Coroners Service and others as the investigation continues.

We will have additional updates as we are able to share them.

If you witnessed the collision and have not yet spoken to officers, please call our non-emergency line at (250) 995-7654 and select extension 1 for the Report Desk.
