Victoria, BC – Patrol officers are investigating after a suspicious circumstance near a school this afternoon.

Shortly after 12 p.m. this afternoon, Patrol officers were called to the area of SJ Willis School, 923 Topaz Avenue, for a report of a man holding what appeared to be a firearm in Topaz Park. Multiples officers attended immediately with a priority response and contained the area surrounding SJ Willis School, and the nearby Quadra Elementary School. Both schools were placed in “lockdown.”

The suspect was reported to have left the area, walking away from the school and into Topaz park. Officers searched the area for over an hour and did not locate a man similar in description to the suspect. SJ Willis and Quadra Elementary moved to a “hold and secure” while officers continued the investigation.

Officers remain in the area of both schools and are continuing to investigate this incident. However, officers do not believe there is a risk to the safety of the students in the area or the wider public. The schools have now resumed normal operations.

This file remains under investigation.
