Victoria, BC – Patrol officers arrested a man last night after he assaulted a staff member and bit a patron at a downtown restaurant.

Shortly after 7 p.m. on Tuesday, February 9th, Patrol officers were called to a restaurant in the 700-block of Yates Street for a report of an assault on staff and patrons. 

Restaurant staff and patrons reported that a man, believed to be intoxicated by drugs, walked into the restaurant without a face mask as required under the COVID-19 Related Measures Act. Staff asked the man to put on a mask and the suspect punched the staff member. Police were called and several restaurant staff and customers restrained the suspect until officers arrived. During that time the suspect bit a restaurant patron.

Officers attended the scene and arrested the suspect for assault causing bodily harm. The restaurant patron suffered non-life-threatening injuries as a result of the bite.

Officers transported the man to VicPD cells where he was held until he was no longer intoxicated and then released on conditions.
