Victoria, BC – Patrol officers arrested a man yesterday morning after he threatened to stab police and bylaw officers.

Shortly before 9 a.m. on Tuesday, May 18th, Patrol officers were assisting bylaw officers as they enforced sheltering bylaws in Cecelia Ravine Park. A man, who had been given several previous warnings about his unlawful structure, was asked to collect his belongings and leave the area. The man refused to comply, became aggressive, and then threatened to stab the officers and bylaw staff with a knife. Officers worked to de-escalate the man using crisis intervention and de-escalation techniques.

The man then fled the area on foot while armed with a knife.

Officers gave chase on foot and caught up with the man in the 400-block of Burnside Road East. He was arrested at gunpoint. There were no injuries in the incident. Officers seized a knife during the arrest.

The man was transported to VicPD cells where he was later released with a court date and conditions. He faces recommended charges of possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, obstructing a peace officer and two counts of uttering threats.
