Victoria, BC – A man is in custody tonight after an hours-long barricade in Victoria.

Shortly after noon today, Patrol officers attended to a suite in a multi-unit residential building in the 600-block of Douglas Street to take a man into custody who was wanted on several warrants under both the Criminal Code and the Mental Health Act. Officers spoke with the man, however he barricaded himself within the suite and refused to communicate further with police.

Members of GVERT, including Crisis Negotiators, attended the scene and worked to resolve the incident for several hours. Despite the efforts of Crisis Negotiators working for several hours, the man refused to surrender to police.

Officers used various tactics including the deployment of an irritant gas. At approximately 8:30 p.m. officers made entry into the suite to take the man into custody without further incident. Officers transported the man to hospital for a mental health assessment. No one was physically injured in this incident.
