Victoria, BC – We’re celebrating Restorative Justice Week both across Canada and around the globe. VicPD has partnered with Restorative Justice Victoria since 2007 to help restore those impacted by crime to our community.

Restorative Justice is an approach to justice that seeks to repair the damage done by crime and conflict. The program emphasizes a victim-centered approach which seeks accountability from offenders and a non-adversarial means of “making things right”. The goal of Restorative Justice is to reach meaningful, satisfying, and fair outcomes through inclusion, open communication, and truth-telling.

This year, we’re honouring and recognizing the work that Restorative Justice Victoria does by centering the voices of those who participate in the process – both victims and offenders. In the video below, two testimonials, one from victim of a crime and one from an offender who both participated in Restorative Justice processes are shared.

At VicPD, we are grateful for the great work of our partners at Restorative Justice Victoria. Since 2007, VicPD has been working closely with Restorative Justice Victoria to achieve outcomes outside of the traditional court system, or in conjunction with that system. On average, we refer over 60 files to Restorative Justice Victoria each year. The most common files referred to Restorative Justice Victoria are theft under $5,000, mischief under $5,000, and assault.

During Restorative Justice Week VicPD thanks Restorative Justice Victoria for their valued contribution to community safety.
