Victoria, BC – Investigators with the Vancouver Island Integrated Major Crime Unit (VIIMCU) are investigating a sudden death which occurred Thursday night.

Just before 9 p.m. Thursday, officers were called to Victoria General Hospital regarding the death of a child. BC Emergency Health Services paramedics had initially responded to a call for assistance in the area of Vancouver and Johnson streets just after 7 p.m. and transported the child and a parent to hospital. Sadly, the child died.

When officers responded, they learned that VicPD officers had responded to a check well-being call involving the parent and child Wednesday evening in the 900-block of Johnson Street. As is standard in these circumstances, VicPD notified the Independent Investigations Office (IIO). The IIO has commenced an investigation to determine what role, if any, police actions or inactions may have played in the death.

This investigation is its early stages and is active and ongoing.

Further information will be shared when possible.

If you have any information about this incident and have not yet spoken to investigators, please call the VicPD Report Desk at (250) 995-7654 extension 1.
