Victoria, BC – Investigators with VicPD’s Investigative Services Division Major Crime Unit (MCU) are continuing an investigation into the sudden death of a child on Thursday, March 24th.

Just before 9 p.m. on Thursday, March 24th, officers were called to Victoria General Hospital regarding the death of a child. BC Emergency Health Services paramedics had initially responded to a call for assistance in the area of Vancouver and Johnson streets just after 7 p.m. and transported the child and a parent to hospital. Sadly, the child died.  Investigators with the Vancouver Island Integrated Major Crime Unit (VIIMCU) initially took conduct of the investigation. The investigation has since returned to VicPD MCU.

During the investigation, investigators learned that VicPD officers conducted a check well-being call involving the parent and child in the early morning hours of Thursday, March 24th in the 900-block of Johnson Street. As is standard in these circumstances, VicPD notified the Independent Investigations Office (IIO). The IIO has commenced an investigation to determine what role, if any, police actions or inactions may have played in the death.

The MCU investigation continues.
