Victoria, BC – VicPD officers arrested a man yesterday afternoon after a report that he threw rocks through the windows of a government building and attempted to steal an occupied vehicle.

Shortly after 2 p.m. yesterday afternoon VicPD officers responded to a report that a man had thrown rocks through two separate windows at a government building in the 900-block of Pandora Avenue. En route to the call, police received additional information that the man had then attempted to steal a vehicle that was occupied by a woman who was parked near Quadra and Mason streets. The man reached into the vehicle through an open window and attempted to take the keys from the woman. The woman was able to retain the keys and drive away from the scene, while the man kicked at her car. The woman was not physically injured during the incident.

Officers arrived on scene as the man returned to the government building and continued to throw rocks at the windows. Officers advised the man that he was under arrest and he attempted to leave the area on foot. When confronted by police, the man challenged officers to physically fight. An officer deployed a conductive energy weapon, or “taser”, and took the man into custody without further incident in the area of Quadra and Mason streets.

Once in custody, the man made a number of concerning statements to officers and was subsequently apprehended under the Mental Health Act and transported to hospital for a mental health assessment. In addition, he will face recommended charges of attempted robbery and mischief.
