Victoria, BC – Officers are reminding you to remove valuables from your vehicle as thefts of valuables from vehicles continue to rise this summer.

File: 19-32212

Patrol officers are investigating after a couple attended our 850 Caledonia Avenue Headquarters to report the loss of over $5000 worth of their items stolen from a rental vehicle parked in the 700-block of Broughton Street on Monday, July 22nd. The couple, who are travelling in Canada from another country, lost much of their clothing and travel gear.

VicPD also partnered with ICBC for a demonstration of how quickly thieves are able to access valuables left in vehicles. As VicPD Social Media officer and Spokesperson Cst. Matthew Rutherford demonstrates in the video above, he was able to smash a window and access valuables within seconds. There are also reports of thieves stealing valuables when vehicles are left unlocked.

Officers are reminding you that the safest way to avoid being a victim of a theft from your vehicle is also the simplest – take your belongings with you.
